Supplier Engineer (Welding)

Location: Penang, Malaysia. Onsite role with 25% travel; relocation eligible.

What you will do

• Develop, qualify, and maintain WPS and PQR documentation for orbital GTAW of UHP gas lines, gas panels, and chamber weldments.
• Establish welder and operator qualification programs for orbital and manual welding personnel.
• Own weld quality in cleanroom fabrication cells, including purge gas control, surface-finish verification, gowning discipline, and contamination prevention.
• Perform and oversee visual, boroscopic, and dimensional inspections, then lead root-cause analysis and corrective actions for weld discrepancies.
• Provide metallurgical oversight of 316L stainless steel and related UHP alloys, including heat-affected-zone control, heat tint, interpass temperature, and back-purge requirements.
• Qualify and maintain orbital welding equipment and supplier weld sources while maintaining traceability and certification records for audits.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Materials or Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience.
• At least 5 years of welding engineering or weld quality experience in semiconductor capital equipment, UHP gas systems, or a comparable regulated high-purity fabrication environment.
• Working knowledge of SEMI F78, F81, E49.8, and F70.
• Hands-on or oversight experience with orbital GTAW equipment from AMI, Polysoude, Orbitalum, or comparable manufacturers, including weld schedule development and machine qualification.
• Strong knowledge of 316L stainless steel metallurgy, electropolishing, sulfur-content effects, ID surface finish, and passivation for UHP fabrication.
• Experience in a certified Class 100/ISO 5 or better cleanroom and with WPS/PQR, welder qualification, VCR/VCO fitting cleanliness, and 8D, fishbone, or 5-Why problem solving.

Nice to have

• AWS Certified Welding Inspector certification or equivalent.
• Supplier qualification or supplier weld audit experience for semiconductor equipment OEMs.
• Experience with gas panel documentation, MFC/component-level FMEA, or ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 sampling plans.
• Familiarity with SEMI F19, F57, and semiconductor equipment quality systems.
