Stop Loss Underwriter

Location: Remote (United States); candidates should be comfortable with an on-site presence to support collaboration, team leadership, and cross-functional partnership.

Base compensation: $65,000–$85,000 annually.

What you will do

• Review employer census data, claims experience, large claimant reports, and medical diagnoses.
• Evaluate specific and aggregate risk exposure and establish attachment points, lasers, and aggregate corridors.
• Price stop loss coverage according to underwriting guidelines.
• Underwrite new employer groups and analyze renewal performance to determine rate adjustments.
• Assess emerging large claims and recurrence risk while balancing competitiveness with profitability.
• Communicate underwriting decisions, support producer negotiations, and collaborate with clinical underwriting, policy administration, sales, and claims teams.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of stop loss underwriting experience, preferably with specific and aggregate coverage.
• Strong knowledge of self-funded health plan structures.
• Experience reviewing large claimant reports and medical diagnoses.
• Proficiency with underwriting models and rating tools.
• Ability to comply with delegated underwriting authority and state and federal regulations.
