Technical Writer (Automotive)

Location: Detroit, Michigan, United States. Hybrid schedule: 4 days per week in-office and 1 day remote. Applicants may work in or relocate to Detroit; relocation assistance is not available.

Starting salary: $58,000–$75,000 USD annually, depending on knowledge, skills, and experience.

What you will do

• Write technical documentation about products, systems, processes, and research findings for internal and external audiences.
• Package technical content from subject matter experts and other sources for truck drivers and service technicians.
• Structure and format complex manuals, bulletins, and other technical publications for readability.
• Research technical information and collaborate with technical staff to interpret complex content accurately.
• Coordinate terminology and technical reviews for updates and new publications.
• Edit content to improve clarity, flow, meaning, impact, and readability.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in English, Writing, Technical Writing, Journalism, or a related field; four years of technical writing experience may substitute for the degree.
• At least two years of technical writing experience, or four years in lieu of a degree.
• Strong analytical, critical-thinking, communication, presentation, and data analytics skills.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and format readable technical manuals and bulletins.
• In-depth knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary.
• Ability to prioritize multiple short-turnaround and critical projects. An attached resume is required.

Nice to have

• Experience developing content with XML, DITA, SGML, or HTML.
• Knowledge of automotive or commercial truck systems and components.
• Experience working with electrical or mechanical engineers.
