TL;DR
Mechanical Product Design Engineer II (Automotive): Designing and developing ladder frame components, cross-members, 5th wheel angles, and ECU/pneumatic valve mounting brackets for commercial vehicles with an accent on chassis architecture, validation, supplier requirements, and cost optimization. Focus on analyzing validation and warranty issues, defining component test plans, improving system quality, and creating technically feasible designs for major vehicle programs.

Location: Portland, OR, US; hybrid schedule with 4 days per week in-office and 1 day remote. Applicants must be legally authorized to work permanently in the United States. Relocation to Portland is possible, but relocation assistance is not available.

Salary: $86,000–$110,000 USD per year

What you will do

  • Design and develop ladder frame components, including frame rails, cross-members, 5th wheel angles, and ECU/pneumatic valve mounting brackets.
  • Coordinate with product and vehicle-level engineering teams to deliver efficient system designs.
  • Analyze validation, warranty, and field issues and develop technically feasible solutions.
  • Define component test specifications, design validation plans, and supplier requirements.
  • Drive cost and complexity optimization, quality improvement, and engineering process initiatives.
  • Collaborate with suppliers, purchasing, manufacturing, sales, customers, and executive stakeholders; mentor new engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 2–4 years of related engineering experience.
  • High proficiency with CAD systems, preferably NX, and engineering documentation.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including technical presentations.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and collaborate cross-functionally.
  • Permanent legal authorization to work in the United States; visa sponsorship and applicants with existing visas are not accepted.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing castings, stampings, and weldments.
  • Knowledge of vehicle packaging, including suspensions, radiators, drivelines, air systems, fuel or DEF tanks, and battery boxes.
  • Experience with Daimler internal systems such as IMACS/IMACS+, PLATON, and ERS.
  • Problem-solving experience with Shainin RedX, Six Sigma, 8D, or similar methods.
  • Experience in new product development and project management.
