Lineman (Electrical Utility)

Location: Gary, Indiana, United States; may require travel throughout the service territory.

Salary: $55.89 per hour

What you will do

• Install, remove, relocate, and maintain overhead transmission and distribution lines and associated equipment.
• Install and maintain underground distribution systems, including cables, transformers, splices, terminals, conduits, and related hardware.
• Locate and repair primary and secondary cable faults.
• Request clearances and perform switching in accordance with operating procedures.
• Perform rubber-glove work on 12.5 kV lines and below and use live-line tools on distribution and transmission systems.
• Operate aerial baskets, tensioners, digger derricks, and trenchers while following safety rules.

Requirements

• Successfully pass the CAST test, climbing and line school, and any required journeyman testing.
• Working knowledge of circuits, voltages, substations, equipment, complex prints, and specifications.
• Ability to climb and work at heights and to perform, instruct, direct, and advise on line work.
• Valid commercial driver’s license and a high school diploma or GED.
• Willingness to be on call, work overtime as needed, and travel throughout the service territory.
• Non-qualified candidates must complete a four-year apprenticeship to become a qualified journeyman lineman.
