TL;DR
Senior Structural Engineer - Mission Critical (Fire Protection): Designing and coordinating fire protection systems for data centers and other mission-critical facilities with an accent on clean agent suppression, pre-action sprinklers, smoke detection, and regulatory compliance. Focus on performing hydraulic calculations and risk assessments, commissioning systems, coordinating multidisciplinary designs, and supporting complex projects during construction.

Location: Lenexa, Kansas, United States; nationwide travel is required.

What you will do

  • Lead the design, coordination, and implementation of fire protection systems for data centers, server farms, telecommunications hubs, and command centers.
  • Design fire suppression, clean agent, pre-action sprinkler, fire alarm, smoke detection, and emergency life safety systems.
  • Perform hydraulic calculations, risk assessments, system evaluations, and fire suppression effectiveness analyses.
  • Develop design criteria, technical specifications, project documentation, and compliance solutions based on NFPA, IBC, UL, and local codes.
  • Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, civil, and architectural disciplines; oversee commissioning, testing, inspections, and construction-phase support.
  • Mentor junior engineers and manage project schedules, budgets, deliverables, reports, and client presentations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field; a master’s degree is a plus.
  • 8–12 years of professional fire protection engineering experience focused on mission-critical facilities.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required; CFPS or other fire protection certifications are highly desirable.
  • Advanced knowledge of clean agent systems, pre-action sprinklers, smoke detection, NFPA 75, NFPA 76, NFPA 2001, IBC, UL standards, and local building codes.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, HydraCAD, BIM, and hydraulic calculation tools.
  • Experience with commissioning, testing, inspections, risk assessments, project management, and multidisciplinary coordination for large-scale data centers or similar facilities.

Nice to have

  • Experience with FM-200, Novec 1230, inert gas suppression, and other advanced fire suppression technologies.
  • Knowledge of energy-efficient and sustainable fire protection design solutions.
  • Experience with global fire protection standards and international markets.
