Senior Director Engineering, Home Software Applications (AI/LLM)

Location: On-site in Oakland, California, or preferably Toronto, Canada

Salary: $239,000–$323,000 annually for positions based in California, plus eligible short-term and long-term variable incentives.

What you will do

• Define and execute the technical and product strategy for home software applications across dealer-facing platforms, consumer mobile and cloud applications, and connected energy product feature teams.
• Lead the AI transformation of software engineering by embedding AI-assisted development practices, evolving team workflows, and using Claude through Amazon Bedrock.
• Lead, grow, and develop an engineering organization of 25–50 engineers across multiple squads and disciplines.
• Partner with the CTO, platform product management, business units, design, hardware, and go-to-market teams to shape multi-year platform architecture and roadmaps.
• Drive reliability, scalability, security, engineering standards, quality frameworks, and platform-level technology partnerships.
• Lead intelligent home energy capabilities such as predictive load management, AI-driven energy optimization, demand response, and personalized energy insights.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 15+ years of progressive software engineering experience, including at least 5 years in a Director-level or above engineering leadership role.
• Experience managing large, multidisciplinary software teams and delivering products across iOS/Android mobile applications and cloud/backend services.
• Hands-on experience building or deploying AI/LLM-powered applications using Claude Code or an equivalent LLM.
• Experience leading an AI-driven engineering transformation, including AI-assisted development tooling, workflow restructuring, and engineering culture change.
• Strong communication skills for presenting technical strategy to executive leaders, business units, and external partners.

Nice to have

• Master’s or PhD in a relevant technical discipline.
• Experience scaling 25–50+ engineer organizations, including organizational design, hiring, and talent development.
• Experience with AI/ML product development, cloud ML pipelines, predictive energy algorithms, RAG, and LLM-powered user experiences.
• Background in IoT or connected home energy products, including device-to-cloud architecture, gateway firmware, OTA updates, and edge/cloud data flows.
• Experience with HEMS, demand response, grid services, utility APIs, dealer platforms, commissioning tools, or remote diagnostics.
