Director, Engineering (AI)

Location: Boston, United States

Target salary range: $225,000–$325,000 per year, varying by location and commensurate with relevant experience.

What you will do

• Lead and develop an expanding engineering organization, including attracting, mentoring, and retaining engineering talent.
• Define the technical roadmap, engineering standards, and architectural blueprints for AI-enabled systems and backend services.
• Oversee the design, development, and production deployment of AI-driven applications and full-stack services.
• Establish advanced CI/CD, automated testing, code review, operational readiness, and reliability practices.
• Track DORA metrics, latency, model inference performance, and infrastructure costs to improve engineering operations.
• Coordinate resource allocation, sprint prioritization, capacity planning, security, compliance, and cross-functional technical execution.

Requirements

• Hands-on knowledge of modern AI architectures, LLM orchestration frameworks, vector databases, secure API design, and distributed full-stack application development.
• Experience scaling engineering teams and developing Managers and Principal or Staff Engineers.
• Ability to translate ambiguous business requirements into phased, executable engineering sprints.
• Excellent communication skills for explaining technical architectures to executive stakeholders and aligning diverse teams.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 8+ years of progressive engineering experience, including 3+ years in engineering management or leadership; occasional travel is required.
