Instructor of Architecture Non-Tenure Track Faculty (Applicant Pool) (Architecture/Education): Teaching on-campus architecture and environmental design courses across architectural design studios, structures, graphics, construction, sustainability, research methods, theory, and environmental control systems with an accent on studio-based instruction, student advising, and curriculum development. Focus on mentoring diverse students, evaluating studio work, collaborating with faculty and peer leaders, and supporting architectural practice and research education.

Montana State University’s School of Architecture provides studio- and lab-based education within the College of Arts and Architecture, with research and creative activity focused on the western landscape.

What you will do

  • Teach one or more on-campus courses in environmental design and architecture, depending on program needs and available funding.
  • Advise, evaluate, and assist students from varied backgrounds.
  • Develop curricula and courses.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and collaborate with faculty, staff, and assigned peer leaders.
  • Participate in midterm and final departmental studio reviews.

Requirements

  • A design-related degree or a demonstrated record of distinguished design teaching.
  • For specialized courses, relevant professional education, significant practice, teaching, research, or demonstrated accomplishment in the subject area.
  • Professional licensure is required for Professional Practice and Building Construction teaching assignments where applicable.
  • Experience working with and engaging students and colleagues within and outside the department.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, verbal, graphic, and teaching communication skills.
  • Ability to build classroom rapport, mentor students, collaborate effectively, work independently, and contribute to program activities.

Nice to have

  • Post-professional degree in Architecture, Ph.D., or terminal degree in the area of specialization.
  • Architectural or professional engineering registration.
  • Experience teaching multiple curriculum areas, digital fabrication, design/build, or advanced computer applications.
  • LEED certification, USGBC membership, or recognized professional practice portfolio.

Culture & Benefits

  • Non-tenure-track pooled appointments may be full-time or part-time and may last from several weeks to an academic year.
  • Applications are reviewed continually and may remain in the hiring pool for up to two years.
  • Benefits eligibility depends on FTE.
  • Positions of 0.5 FTE or more may be represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University; positions below 0.5 FTE are not represented by the union.
  • This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
