Sr. Claim Counsel - Surety, Construction Services

Location: Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States

Salary: $139,400–$230,000 annual base salary, plus eligibility for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What you will do

• Analyze, investigate, evaluate, and resolve business insurance and surety claims with limited supervision.
• Prepare management reports covering loss development, financial exposure, reserves, coverage issues, and claim or recovery strategies.
• Provide legal advice to underwriters and claims professionals on bond obligations, project contracts, coverage, indemnity, collateral, and recovery matters.
• Retain and manage outside counsel, vendors, litigation plans, and budgets; attend mediations, settlements, trials, depositions, and claim conferences.
• Manage defaulted construction contracts, bankruptcy proceedings, proofs of claim, account workouts, and negotiations involving bonded obligations.
• Support underwriting initiatives through broker and account visits, risk mitigation seminars, research, and customer-focused publications.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctorate degree.
• Licensed, registered, or authorized and in good standing to practice law in the jurisdiction where the role is performed.
• At least three years of relevant legal experience; six or more years of relevant legal or claims-handling experience is preferred for the role.
• Experience analyzing coverage, negotiating terms, resolving conflicts, and making decisions within designated authority limits.
• Strong verbal and written communication, time management, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Ability to build collaborative relationships with colleagues, customers, underwriters, and business partners.
