Manager - Testing & Commissioning Engineering (Transmission and Substation Systems): Leading a 9–15-person engineering workforce responsible for testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, and commissioning of transmission and distribution power equipment, protection and control systems. with an accent on safety, equipment reliability, engineering standards, and NERC compliance. Focus on directing complex field activities, qualifying engineers, managing emergent storm and restoration work, and developing technical procedures and engineering recommendations.

Location: Libertyville, Illinois, United States; onsite. The role may require extended hours during storms, equipment restoration, and other emergent energy delivery activities.

Annual salary: $123,200–$169,400, plus an annual bonus opportunity of 20%.

What you will do

  • Lead and manage 9–15 testing and commissioning engineers, field engineers, technicians, and supporting contractors.
  • Plan and direct field testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, construction, and commissioning of transmission and distribution power equipment, communication systems, and protection and control systems.
  • Provide technical authority and review equipment testing and commissioning plans, engineering drawings, standards, specifications, and field results.
  • Qualify engineers under the TCE onboarding and qualification matrix, provide coaching and technical training, and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Coordinate resources, schedules, projects, maintenance programs, and emergent activities with operations, construction, engineering, asset management, and regional groups.
  • Maintain safety, reliability, compliance, and incident-mitigation processes, including support for nuclear switchyard relaying and communication equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or another technical discipline, or an associate degree with 9–12 years of relevant experience.
  • 7–10 years of transmission and substation industry experience, including at least 5 years performing field testing and commissioning; associate-degree candidates need at least 7 years of field testing and commissioning experience.
  • 3–5 years of supervisory or managerial experience leading teams and managing complex projects.
  • Expertise in substation and transmission systems, protection and control devices, operating, maintenance, and construction practices, and electrical equipment troubleshooting.
  • Valid driver’s license and successful completion of the Leadership Assessment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, build consensus, enforce safe work practices, manage personnel across multiple jobsites, and support long-term planning.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in engineering or advanced system protection training.
  • Professional Engineering license.
  • Experience with utility financial management, process improvements, human-performance error prevention, and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Ability to pass necessary nuclear badging criteria.
