What you will do

  • Investigate and extend quantum computing methods for chemistry and their applications to Large Quantitative Models.
  • Benchmark quantum approaches against the classical frontier to identify practical limits and opportunities.
  • Estimate quantum resources, including circuit depth, gate counts, measurement requirements, and shot requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal scientists, AI-simulation and catalysis teams, and external academic researchers.
  • Translate technical findings for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Produce a public technical assessment and, where appropriate, a peer-reviewed scientific publication.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed a PhD in physics, chemistry, computational mathematics, electrical or computer engineering, or a related field.
  • Research experience with near-term quantum algorithms for electronic structure, such as VQE, ADAPT-VQE, QSCI/SQD, or quantum Krylov methods.
  • Proficiency in Python and at least one quantum SDK, such as Qiskit, PennyLane, or Cirq, with reproducible computational work.
  • Experience producing quantum resource estimates and evaluating practical feasibility.
  • Independent research output, including peer-reviewed publications or preprints, and the ability to work with limited day-to-day supervision.
  • Working knowledge of quantum chemistry or electronic-structure software, including tools such as PySCF or VASP, and active-space or embedding methods.

Nice to have

  • Experience running circuits on real quantum hardware, applying error mitigation, or post-processing noisy measurement data.
  • Research on measurement complexity, shot reduction, or observable estimation.
  • Experience with machine-learning interatomic potentials or surrogate models trained on quantum-chemical data.
  • Background in catalysis, surface chemistry, magnetism, or strongly correlated materials.
