Senior/Staff Research Software Engineer (Quantum Computing)

Location: Cambridge, UK; hybrid

Salary: £80,000–£110,000 per year, depending on experience

What you will do

• Turn research ideas and prototypes into correct, maintainable, and fast software.
• Implement reliable and optimized decoding algorithms.
• Maintain repositories and software releases to a high engineering standard.
• Extend tools for quantum simulation, quantum error correction decoding, and analysis.
• Collaborate with mathematicians, physicists, engineers, and other teams across the quantum error correction stack.
• At Staff level, set technical direction across projects and potentially lead a small team.

Requirements

• MSc in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Proficiency in C++ and Python.
• Experience with collaborative programming and software engineering tools, including CI/CD, containers, version control, and static and dynamic code analysis.
• Knowledge of linear algebra, discrete mathematics, and probability.
• Strong problem-solving, written communication, and oral communication skills.
• Interest in quantum computing and ability to work independently and collaboratively.

• Experience shipping software to users.

• Experience with GPU programming.
