TL;DR
Research Assistant (Wildlife Research): Conducting wildlife monitoring and processing acoustic recordings, photographs, and species identifications in west Texas with an accent on autonomous recording units, trail cameras, and automated classification software. Focus on deploying and maintaining field equipment, verifying bird, bat, and mammal detections, and collecting accurate data in demanding outdoor conditions.

Location: College Station, Texas, with frequent travel to field sites in west Texas for outdoor wildlife monitoring.

Salary: $15.85 per hour.

What you will do

  • Deploy, maintain, retrieve, and troubleshoot autonomous acoustic and ultrasonic recording units and trail cameras at west Texas field sites.
  • Organize and process acoustic recordings and wildlife photographs using automated classification tools such as BirdNET, SonoBat, and MegaDetector.
  • Manually verify species identifications from classifier results, with a focus on birds, bats, and mammals.
  • Enter data, perform quality control checks, and upload files to the project database.
  • Maintain detailed field notes, ensure field gear is operational, and communicate regularly with supervisors and collaborators.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology or a closely related natural resource field.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a small team with strong attention to detail and effective communication.
  • Ability to work early mornings, hike for extended periods while carrying a field pack, and work in intense heat, sun, thick brush, steep terrain, and other adverse environmental conditions.
  • Ability to obtain a valid driver's license.
  • Proficient typing and transcription skills, including the ability to complete repetitive tasks.

Nice to have

  • Experience identifying west Texas birds, mammals, or bats, including identification by sound or sonogram.
  • Experience deploying autonomous recording units or trail cameras for wildlife research.
  • Experience driving 4WD vehicles and collecting spatial data with GPS.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps, or automated wildlife classification software.
