Child Life Specialist (Pediatrics)

Location: Tufts Medical Center; onsite work in inpatient and/or outpatient pediatric clinical care areas

Pay range: $24.65–$30.82 per hour

What you will do

• Provide developmentally appropriate play and activities that support normal growth and development.
• Design and implement individualized interventions based on each patient’s development, coping style, diagnosis, treatment, and psychosocial supports.
• Use medical play, age-appropriate language, teaching tools, and therapeutic techniques to prepare and support patients during procedures.
• Support parents, family members, and siblings while advocating for the needs of children and families.
• Communicate patient-care information during rounds, case conferences, and in medical records.
• Train and supervise Child Life and child development students and volunteers, while maintaining supplies and intervention data.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Child Life, Human Development, or a related field.
• Completion of a 400-hour Child Life internship.
• Ability to work onsite with pediatric patients in clinical care areas and manage continuous exposure to sick patients and bodily substances.
• Ability to work with infants, toddlers, preschool and school-age children, and adolescents using developmentally appropriate approaches.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
• Empathy, strong interpersonal and organizational skills, reliability, and the ability to function effectively in busy situations.

• Child Life certification or eligibility to apply for certification.
