Senior/Staff Backend Engineer, Applied AI

Base salary: $200,000–$350,000 per year, plus equity

What you will do

• Architect and scale AI-powered backend systems for document extraction, entity resolution, retrieval, and structured data generation.
• Design resilient pipelines, queues, orchestration layers, and failure-handling mechanisms for production AI workflows.
• Own data modeling and backend architecture across PostgreSQL and related storage systems for complex financial and operational data.
• Establish observability, evaluation, tracing, monitoring, debugging, and guardrail standards for AI systems.
• Improve reliability and developer velocity through better abstractions, tooling, and engineering patterns.
• Provide technical leadership through architecture reviews, design feedback, collaboration with product and frontend teams, and mentorship.

Requirements

• 7+ years of backend or full-stack software engineering experience, including ownership of production backend systems.
• Strong experience with Node.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, concurrency, queuing, data pipelines, and reliable server-side systems.
• Hands-on experience building products with LLMs, including agent architectures, RAG systems, extraction pipelines, or tool-use patterns.
• Ability to reason about failure modes, retries, observability, cost, performance, and scaling in AI workflows.
• Technical leadership experience with architecture decisions, design reviews, code quality, and engineering mentorship.
• Bachelor’s degree minimum.

Nice to have

• Experience owning architecture for AI-native or data-intensive backend platforms.
• Production experience with Inngest, Temporal, or Step Functions.
• Experience with OCR, document intelligence, search, or financial and legal data extraction at scale.
• Early-stage startup experience and experience improving technical standards across a team.
