TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer (Marine Hardware): Designing and manufacturing mechanical hardware for ocean sensing networks with an accent on reliability, manufacturability, and performance in harsh marine environments. Focus on owning CAD-to-production designs, building and debugging prototypes, integrating sensors, and solving multidisciplinary hardware challenges through testing and failure analysis.

Location: San Francisco, United States

Salary: $135,000–$170,000 per year

Company

hirify.global develops hardware that powers ocean sensing networks at the intersection of ocean science, climate, and technology.

What you will do

  • Own mechanical designs and subassemblies from early concepts and 3D CAD through prototyping, validation, and production.
  • Design reliable hardware for harsh marine environments while balancing performance, manufacturability, cost, and schedule.
  • Build, test, debug, and iterate on prototypes and production hardware using testing and failure analysis.
  • Lead mechanical design reviews and collaborate with electrical, firmware, software, and manufacturing engineers on integrated systems.
  • Work with suppliers, machine shops, vendors, and contract manufacturers to develop and scale parts and assemblies.
  • Support marine sensing applications, customer collaboration, field testing, and ocean deployments.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional mechanical engineering experience designing hardware for marine, robotics, aerospace, automotive, or other demanding environments.
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD, preferably Onshape or SolidWorks, with experience owning designs from concept through production.
  • Strong fundamentals in materials and process selection, structural analysis, fatigue, tolerancing, GD&T, and engineering drawings.
  • Experience building, testing, debugging, and iterating on physical hardware.
  • Strong engineering judgment and effective collaboration across electrical, firmware, manufacturing, and external vendor teams.
  • Visa sponsorship is available, although sponsorship cannot be guaranteed for every role or situation.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing hardware for marine or subsea environments, including sealing, corrosion, and long-duration environmental exposure.
  • Experience with FEA and static, cyclic, impact, or thermal loads.
  • Experience integrating sensors into larger systems.
  • Hands-on machining or fabrication experience.
  • Previous startup experience and a connection to the ocean.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work on consequential problems spanning ocean science, climate, and technology.
  • Collaborate in a small, fast-moving engineering environment.
  • Use AI tools for research, preparation, and selected work activities, with hiring decisions made by people.
  • Immigration lawyer support is provided for visa sponsorship processes.

Hiring process

  • Applicants should submit their own initial application draft; AI may be used for refinement and polishing.
  • Take-home assessments must be completed independently unless AI use is explicitly permitted.
  • Interview preparation may include researching Sofar and practicing with AI; interviews focus on live conversation and real-time thinking.
