Machine Design Engineer

Location: Upton, New York, United States; onsite work supporting the NSLS-II facility

Salary: $100,600–$146,975 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications.

What you will do

• Design and provide engineering support for NSLS-II mechanical systems, including storage ring magnet supports, front-end systems, utilities, and HVAC.
• Prepare detailed designs, specifications, calculations, drawings, and cost estimates.
• Manage projects from conceptual design and planning through budgeting, construction, installation, commissioning, and testing.
• Coordinate engineers, technicians, in-house trades, and general contractors while controlling scope, schedule, and budget.
• Develop system start-up, testing, verification, maintenance, and field-certification procedures.
• Support accelerator operations, improve system reliability, maintain safety practices, and report technical work to stakeholders and senior leadership.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and at least 3 years of experience in a mechanical engineering-related field, with an emphasis on machine design.
• Ability to manage design responsibilities from project conception through completion.
• Working knowledge of Inventor 3D or similar modeling software.
• Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 dimensioning and tolerancing standards.
• Understanding of classical mechanical engineering analysis, technical writing, spreadsheets, and effective communication with scientists and technical staff.
• REAL-ID or REAL-ID-compliant documentation is required for access to the laboratory site, including interviews.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in mechanical engineering and 7 or more years of experience.
• Experience scheduling and tracking projects with Microsoft Project or similar software.
• Experience with ANSYS thermal, vibration, and stress/strain analysis.
