TL;DR
Manufacturing Engineer (Biotechnology): Maintaining, improving, and validating manufacturing equipment and production processes with an accent on automation, electrical and mechanical systems, and equipment safety. Focus on designing hardware and software improvements, independently conducting engineering experiments, managing equipment projects, and supporting vendor and site travel.

Location: Austin, TX, United States; on-site role with approximately 20% travel to vendors and other Thermo Fisher sites

What you will do

  • Perform corrective and preventive maintenance on automated and manual manufacturing equipment, including fillers, cappers, labelers, printers, centrifuges, ovens, chillers, vacuum systems, and fermenters.
  • Identify and implement solutions for equipment and site safety findings.
  • Assist with the design, development, assembly, wiring, validation, and management of new production equipment and processes.
  • Design and implement hardware and software improvements for instruments, processes, and equipment.
  • Conduct engineering experiments, interpret results, present findings to stakeholders, and implement solutions.
  • Plan and manage engineering projects according to timelines and budgets, including requirements, specifications, equipment layouts, and spare-parts planning.

Requirements

  • 2–3+ years of equipment repair experience.
  • Knowledge of equipment automation, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, vacuum, fluidics, and software systems.
  • Experience with instrument assembly, manufacturing, testing, building, assembling, and wiring equipment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Biomedical Engineering, or an applicable associate/vocational degree with relevant experience.
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems analytically, learn new technologies quickly, and collaborate effectively.
  • Ability to work on site in Austin, Texas and travel approximately 20% as needed.

Nice to have

  • Biotechnology manufacturing experience.
  • Experience with ISO 9001, ISO 13485, or GMP.
  • Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing experience.
  • Experience with continuous improvement.
