Wildland Urban Interface Coordinator I

Location: San Antonio, Texas; frequent travel to offices and on-site locations across Region 6. The role includes field work, emergency response assignments, extended hours, and possible deployment for 14+ days.

Salary: $4,500 per month minimum.

Texas A&M Forest Service provides wildfire prevention, mitigation, firefighting, conservation education, and emergency response services through the Texas A&M University System.

What you will do

• Plan, implement, and provide technical assistance for Community Wildfire Protection Plans, Firewise Communities, WUI risk assessments, and fuel management or reduction projects.
• Coordinate wildfire prevention and mitigation programs with municipal, county, federal, and community partners.
• Deliver or support field fuel reduction, conservation education, wildfire prevention, wildland firefighting training, and all-hazard response training.
• Track program deliverables, budgets, schedules, reports, and administrative requirements.
• Serve on incident management, fire prevention, and WUI mitigation teams and act as a Public Information Officer when needed.
• Support wildfire suppression and other emergency response efforts within the NIMS/ICS environment.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Range Science, Natural Resource Management, Fire Management, Fire Ecology, Agriculture Leadership, or a closely related field.
• Entry-level position; no prior experience is required.
• Working knowledge of computers, presentation and communication software, and GIS applications.
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to work independently and cooperatively.
• Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one, plus willingness to travel and attend required training.
• Must be able to meet physical requirements, work extended hours on short notice, and respond to emergency assignments lasting 14 or more days.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in a related field.
• Firefighter or fire department instructor experience.
• Experience in traditional, social, or print communications and GIS.
• Basic firefighter certification, TCFP or SFFMA fire prevention certification, or NWCG credentials.
• Completion of the arduous annual Work Capacity Test: a three-mile walk carrying 45 pounds in 45 minutes or less.
