TL;DR
Unit Coordinator - Maternal Newborn (Hospital Administration): Coordinating patient activity, bed assignments, medical records, orders, and communication across the maternal newborn unit with an accent on clerical accuracy, patient flow, and clinical coordination. Focus on maintaining confidential medical records, transcribing physician orders, managing emergency communications, and supporting admissions, transfers, and discharges.

Location: Melrose/Wakefield Hospital, 585 Lebanon St, Melrose, MA 02176, United States. Full-time onsite role with day/evening shifts from 7:00am–3:30pm or 7:00am–7:00pm, including every third weekend and holiday rotation.

Pay range: $18.81–$23.51.

What you will do

  • Coordinate patient admissions, transfers, discharges, bed changes, bed cleaning requests, and unit activity.
  • Review bed assignments and relay patient information to clinical staff.
  • Greet and direct patients, visitors, physicians, and hospital personnel while managing unit phone communications and messages.
  • Assemble, update, organize, and prepare patient charts and medical records according to hospital policy.
  • Enter and verify orders, transcribe physician orders, retrieve data, and generate reports using hospital systems.
  • Coordinate communication during emergencies and support follow-up appointments, supplies, equipment tracking, downtime procedures, and new coordinator orientation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong interpersonal, phone, written communication, organizational, prioritization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to handle detailed confidential information independently and work with staff across departments, physicians, patients, vendors, and community members.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and hospital computer systems.
  • Extensive medical terminology knowledge for communication and physician-order transcription.
  • Ability to sit frequently, stand or walk occasionally, lift 10–15 pounds, and operate a computer keyboard.

Nice to have

  • One year of customer service experience in a healthcare or customer-facing setting.
  • Associate’s degree.
