Chapter Lead Engineer (Java)

The role supports Bank Mendes Gans, ING’s specialized wholesale banking subsidiary focused on cash management, liquidity management, and transaction banking solutions.

What you will do

• Lead end-to-end engineering delivery for Agile DevOps squads, including sprint goals, roadmaps, dependencies, risks, and technical debt.
• Manage the full lifecycle of owned services, from development through production operations, incident investigation, root cause analysis, and on-call support.
• Set engineering standards covering secure-by-design development, DevOps, CI/CD, test automation, observability, resilience, and design for failure.
• Coach engineers on solution design, reliability, scalability, maintainability, architecture, and technology modernization.
• Lead responsible adoption of AI-assisted engineering, automation, self-service capabilities, and productivity improvements.
• Develop a team of 8–15 engineers through performance management, mentoring, workforce planning, hiring, and capability-building initiatives.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience with a JVM language and related technology stack.
• At least 2 years of people management experience.
• Hands-on experience with Java 21, Spring Boot 4.x, Spring Framework, JPA/Hibernate, REST or gRPC APIs, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, accessibility, security, and a UI framework such as Lit-HTML, Angular, React, Vue, or Svelte.
• Knowledge of enterprise integration patterns, JMS, Kafka, relational databases such as MS SQL Server or Oracle, Domain-Driven Design, architecture patterns, communication protocols, Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift.
• Experience with source control, CI/CD pipelines, Azure DevOps, Git, Maven, Confluence, unit and BDD testing, and Playwright web testing automation.
• Advanced English is required, together with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant analytical field.

Nice to have

• Performance testing with JMeter or Gatling.
• Experience with monitoring metrics, alerting, application profiling, and the Elastic Stack.
• Knowledge of IT security concepts or experience with Kotlin and other JVM languages.
