Sr Engineer - Transmission & Substation Protection Analysis

Location: Hybrid role based in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, United States. Extended hours may be required during storms and other energy delivery emergencies.

Annual salary: $103,200–$141,900, plus a 15% bonus for eligible positions.

What you will do

• Analyze automatic transmission, distribution, and substation operations, system faults, abnormal conditions, and degraded protection systems.
• Review protective relay event records, relay targets, equipment operations, and SCADA Historian data to determine fault types and evaluate protection performance.
• Provide immediate fault location information for qualifying 69kV-and-above and critical 34kV line operations.
• Perform CAPE and CYME fault studies, validate system models, and use the FALLS lightning service to correlate lightning strikes with equipment events.
• Identify root causes, generate corrective maintenance work requests, and develop programs for systematic issues.
• Support Operations, Transmission and Substation, Asset Management, field testing, power quality, claims, and design engineering activities.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or a Professional Engineer license.
• 7+ years of professional engineering experience and thorough experience in a specialized engineering area.
• Knowledge of engineering design principles, applicable standards, codes, methods, and practices.
• Ability to analyze complex electrical and mechanical systems and resolve complex engineering issues.
• Strong teamwork, interpersonal, written, oral communication, presentation, report generation, and technical writing skills.
• Advanced utility infrastructure experience and working knowledge of tools such as CYMDIST, PSS/E, Python, PLS-CAD, Pole Foreman, or Power BI.

Nice to have

• Graduate degree or graduate-level coursework in Engineering, Business Administration, or Project Management.
• Engineer-in-Training certification or Professional Engineer license.
• At least three related career experiences, recognized industry committee leadership, an MBA, or Project Management Certification.
