Medical Interpreter - Portuguese

Location: Tufts Medical Center, United States; full-time in-person work

Pay range: $23.04–$28.80 per hour

What you will do

• Interpret spoken communication between English and Portuguese for patients, families, physicians, and staff.
• Translate correspondence, brochures, medical documents, and information about diagnostic procedures.
• Act as a cultural broker to identify and resolve misunderstandings between patients and providers.
• Support family meetings, patient transfers, consent processes, appointment notifications, and care conferences.
• Accompany patients to operating rooms or other departments when interpretation support is required.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and HIPAA/HITECH guidelines.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Bilingual English and Portuguese communication skills, including reading and writing.
• Medical Interpreter Certification from an accredited college or university, or completion of a medical interpreter training course and a third-party competency exam.
• At least one year of relevant interpreting experience.
• Knowledge of interpreting techniques, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, and treatments in both languages.
• Ability to work in a busy clinical environment and handle sensitive patient information with courtesy and tact.

Nice to have

• National Certification for Medical Interpreters.
• Three years of relevant interpreting experience.
