What you will do

• Provide accurate Cape Verdean/Portuguese interpretation between medical providers, patients, and families.
• Interpret consent forms, diagnoses, medical procedures, discharge plans, and other patient-related information.
• Deliver interpretation in person, by video, and by telephone across the hospital system.
• Respond to interpretation requests, prioritizing emergency and urgent needs, and support patients from entry through discharge.
• Act as a cultural broker when communication is affected by culture-bound messages.
• Process assignments, maintain service records, follow department procedures, and complete interpreter competency assessments.

Requirements

• At least one year of medical interpreter experience.
• Fluency in English and Cape Verdean/Portuguese, both verbal and written, is required.
• Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, diagnostic procedures, and treatments.
• Knowledge of medical interpreter ethics and nationally recognized standards of practice.
• Completion certificate from a medical interpreter training program is required.
• Strong concentration, organization, interpersonal, prioritization, and problem-solving skills; bachelor’s degree in a human relations field is preferred.

• National medical interpreter certification.
• Bachelor’s degree in sociology, psychology, or a related human relations field.
