Mid-Level Thermal Engineer (Aerospace)

Location: Washington, DC — Naval Research Laboratory; U.S. citizenship and an active Secret clearance are required.

Salary: $113,000–$160,000 per year, depending on experience and location; eligible for an annual performance bonus and possible equity or incentive compensation.

What you will do

• Develop analytical thermal models for aerospace systems, including transient and steady-state analyses.
• Perform thermal and aerothermal analyses using industry-standard tools.
• Validate analytical models through test data, simulations, and comparative methods.
• Provide thermal performance predictions and design recommendations to engineering teams.
• Apply CFD methods to assess aerothermal loads, heating environments, and system performance.
• Prepare technical documentation, analysis reports, and presentations while following government procurement and program requirements.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship and an active Secret clearance required; TS/SCI preferred.
• At least five years of experience in thermal and aerothermal design and analysis for aerospace applications.
• Proficiency with TRASYS, SINDA/Fluint, and Thermal Desktop.
• Experience with FORTRAN and Python for scripting, automation, or model development.
• Working knowledge of STAR-CCM+, HEEDS, and Cart3D.
• Strong understanding of thermal modeling, heat transfer principles, and system-level integration.

Nice to have

• Experience using CFD for aerothermal prediction and system-level analysis.
• Background in passive and active two-phase heat transfer systems.
• Familiarity with thermal protection systems for reentry applications.
• Experience supporting government programs and knowledge of procurement regulations and compliance requirements.
