TL;DR
Principal Heat Transfer Engineer (Turbomachinery): Defining, analyzing, and experimentally validating turbine cooling systems and engine thermal management with an accent on high-temperature heat transfer, transient analysis, and cooled turbine components. Focus on developing finite element and CFD models, validating analytical results against test data, improving cooling design methods, and mentoring analysts.

Location: San Diego, California; onsite five days a week. Relocation is available. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Salary: $120,600–$180,900 per year

What you will do

  • Define, analyze, and experimentally validate turbine cooling systems, including secondary flow circuits, turbine disks, diaphragms, and cooled airfoils.
  • Perform engine thermal management and steady-state and transient thermal analysis.
  • Develop advanced cooling techniques and improve heat transfer and design methodologies.
  • Apply thermal and fluid-system expertise while collaborating with interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Propose and implement innovative technical solutions and contribute to engineering discussions and reviews.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Direct experience performing advanced thermal analysis for high-temperature turbomachinery at a gas turbine OEM or equivalent organization.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally and bring technical work to concise closure.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex and challenging priorities.
  • Knowledge of advanced heat transfer design for turbomachinery and gas turbine cooling systems.
  • Experience with thermal FEA, CFD, and validation of analytical models using experimental test data.

Nice to have

  • Advanced degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with an emphasis on thermal or fluid systems.
  • Experience creating 2D axisymmetric whole-engine finite element models using Ansys Mechanical APDL.
  • Experience with 1D flow network analysis, cooled turbine blade and vane analysis, and gas turbine secondary flow system design.
  • Experience developing FE modeling best practices, quality-control procedures, and standard work.
  • Experience with Ansys Mechanical APDL and Workbench, 1D flow network tools, Pro-Engineer/Creo, NX, SpaceClaim, or Star CCM+.
