Engineering Tech Lead, Data Platform – USDS (AI)

Location: San Jose, United States; fully in-person schedule up to 5 days per week

Salary: $187,040–$438,000 annually, with potential discretionary bonuses, incentives, and restricted stock units.

What you will do

• Define the long-term technical strategy and architecture for AI-driven internal products.
• Design scalable, secure, and cost-efficient systems including enterprise conversational RAG platforms and autonomous diagnostic engines.
• Build self-service data platforms that enable Legal, Finance, HR, and other non-technical stakeholders to solve complex data problems independently.
• Integrate intelligent automation into the Meego release governance pipeline to improve reliability and reduce operational risk.
• Lead cross-functional platformization of AI pilots, including standards for A/B testing and resource allocation.
• Mentor engineers and establish standards for code quality, technical documentation, system resilience, and high-velocity execution.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 5+ years of professional software development experience and a track record of leading large-scale projects from 0–1 through maturity.
• Experience serving as a Technical Lead for a mid- to large-sized team, with architectural oversight and cross-team influence.
• Expertise in backend systems using Go, Python, Java, or C++, plus strong knowledge of distributed systems and data infrastructure.
• Ability to work fully in person in San Jose, with office presence up to five days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience building and scaling LLM-based agents, complex RAG architectures, and Human-in-the-Loop automation.
• Experience creating enterprise-scale internal productivity ecosystems such as automated SQL engines, intelligent on-call bots, or large-scale A/B testing platforms.
• Experience working within complex compliance and security environments while maintaining engineering velocity.
• Ability to communicate AI and infrastructure roadmaps to executive leadership and government relations stakeholders.
