TL;DR
Associate Research Scientist (Medical Devices) (Analytical Chemistry/Mass Spectrometry): Conducting chemical characterization studies of drug containers and medical device materials, identifying extractable and leachable compounds with an accent on chromatography, mass spectrometry, and ICP/MS elemental analysis. Focus on designing and directing regulated laboratory studies, validating analytical methods, interpreting complex mass spectral data, and completing reports through audit.

Location: Lake Zurich, Illinois, United States. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available now or in the future.

Salary: $85,000–$100,000 per year, plus eligibility for a bonus plan with a target of 6% of base salary.

What you will do

  • Conduct chemical characterization studies of drug containers and medical device materials, including extractable and leachable compounds.
  • Analyze trace organic compounds using gas chromatography and liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry detection.
  • Perform elemental analysis using ICP/MS and provide technical expertise on analytical instrumentation.
  • Design studies and protocols, direct execution, resolve issues, and prepare final reports through audit.
  • Support analytical method development, method validation, laboratory operations, calibrations, and supplies.
  • Review laboratory documentation and results while providing technical and collegial support to scientists.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry required; an advanced degree, PhD, or relevant master’s degree is preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience with analytical tools and techniques used in medical device or pharmaceutical product development.
  • At least 5 years of experience with laboratory instrumental techniques, method development, and method validation.
  • Hands-on experience with ICP/MS, GC, LC, analytical mass spectrometry, and advanced data processing systems.
  • Experience in FDA-regulated laboratories and GMP, GLP, and GDP operations.
  • English proficiency is required for speaking, reading, writing, and understanding workplace documentation and communications.

Nice to have

  • Experience with instrument system validation.
  • PhD in chemistry or a related discipline.
  • Experience working with human blood or blood components under procedural controls and personal protective equipment.
