Senior Software Engineer, AI Agent and Automation - USDS

Location: San Jose, United States; fully in-person schedule of up to 5 days per week

Salary: $187,040–$438,000 annually, with potential discretionary bonuses, incentives, and restricted stock units.

What you will do

• Own the technical roadmap for AI agent workflows and platforms supporting USDS safety operations.
• Design and build agent runtimes, state management, tool-calling frameworks, and multi-agent orchestration components.
• Build interactive UIs and workflow editors for monitoring, debugging, and configuring AI workflows.
• Integrate LLMs and detection models into reusable workflow nodes with high reliability and low latency.
• Drive migration of critical data pipelines to USDS and design robust recovery for safety-critical services.
• Collaborate with product and data science teams to turn ambiguous safety needs into scalable automation solutions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or a related technical field.
• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building large-scale production systems.
• Strong backend experience with Go, Java, or Python, including distributed systems, concurrency, and microservices architecture.
• Hands-on experience with TypeScript and React for complex, interactive internal tools.
• Practical experience integrating LLM or ML capabilities into products, including prompt engineering, model latency, and evaluation flows.
• Willingness to work fully in person in San Jose, up to 5 days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience building workflow engines such as Temporal or Airflow, or node-based editors such as React Flow.
• Familiarity with RAG, multi-step agents, and tool-calling patterns.
• Experience in trust and safety, privacy, or regulatory engineering.
• Experience as a 0→1 or early-stage builder on ambiguous projects.
