Senior Counsel, Intellectual Property (AI)

Location: Remote within the United States

Salary: $182,400–$342,000 annually, depending on geographic pay tier, skills, experience, education, and location.

SandboxAQ is a high-growth AI company developing Large Quantitative Models for applications including life sciences, financial services, navigation, cybersecurity, and other sectors.

What you will do

• Own the patent portfolio end to end, including invention harvesting, filing strategy, prosecution, continuations, abandonments, and annuities.
• Partner with PhD-level physicists, chemists, machine learning researchers, scientists, and engineers to identify and evaluate patentable work.
• Manage outside patent firms and foreign associates for quality, cost, and timeliness.
• Lead freedom-to-operate and clearance analyses supporting product strategy and launches.
• Provide IP guidance for commercial, collaboration, and corporate transactions.
• Build the broader IP program covering trade secrets, trademarks, legal strategy, and risk mitigation.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor or equivalent law degree and admission to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• At least 7 years of substantive intellectual property law experience with significant patent law expertise.
• Strong technical fluency and the ability to work credibly with physicists, chemists, machine learning researchers, and other technical experts.
• Strategic, agile, collaborative, and able to translate complex legal concepts into actionable business strategies.
• Must be eligible to work remotely within the United States.

Nice to have

• Combination of in-house and Big Law experience.
• USPTO registration or patent bar admission.
• STEM degree in physics, chemistry, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field.
• Experience with AI/ML, life sciences, computational chemistry, Section 101 eligibility strategy, government-funded contracts, trade secrets, litigation, or contested proceedings.
• Experience building an IP program at an early-stage company or using AI tools for prior art review, disclosure drafting, portfolio analytics, docket triage, and outside counsel review.
