Patent Agent - Research (Biotechnology)

Location: Hybrid, 2–3 days per week, based in New York City, Bar Harbor, Maine, or Farmington, Connecticut

Salary: $106,020–$153,729 annually, based on total years of related experience.

What you will do

• Advise JAX researchers and cross-functional partners on intellectual property opportunities, strategies, risks, collaborations, and publications.
• Review invention disclosures and conduct or manage patent landscape, prior-art, patentability, clearance, and freedom-to-operate searches.
• Develop and implement IP portfolio strategies, including patent drafting, prosecution, maintenance, portfolio reviews, and pruning.
• Collaborate with inventors to collect technical details, drawings, and experimental data for effective patent protection.
• Provide patent filing data and federally funded invention and patent reports through iEdison under the Bayh-Dole Act.
• Deliver IP presentations and training to employees and participate in research reviews and retreats.

Requirements

• Registration to practice before the USPTO and at least 5 years of patent drafting and prosecution experience in-house and/or at an IP law firm.
• Strong scientific expertise in genetics, molecular or cell biology, immunology, cell physiology/biophysics, biochemistry, or a comparable life science field.
• Excellent communication, presentation, writing, organizational, collaboration, and project management skills.
• Experience working with academic investigators and the ability to work independently are required.
• A PhD with applicable research and/or product development experience is preferred; an MS with at least 4 years of applicable experience will be considered.
• Occasional domestic travel may be required.
