Principal Security Engineer – AI & Copilot Data Protection

Location: Chicago, IL, United States. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. without employment-based visa sponsorship.

Salary: $137,400–$233,600 USD annual base pay, plus potential discretionary bonus and benefits.

What you will do

• Lead the technical strategy, architecture, and operationalization of AI and Microsoft 365 Copilot security controls.
• Design AI data protection reference architectures across Microsoft Purview, Defender, and Microsoft 365.
• Review and harden web grounding, search, agents, plugins, connectors, permissions, identity context, transcripts, and retention models.
• Implement and operate information protection, labeling, DLP, endpoint DLP, insider risk, communication compliance, retention, and DSPM for AI controls.
• Build monitoring, alerting, automation, runbooks, and evidence-preservation processes for high-risk AI usage.
• Translate AI threat models into enforceable controls and partner with Security, Compliance, Privacy, M365, and Risk stakeholders.

Requirements

• Principal-level cybersecurity experience with broad autonomy and architect-level accountability.
• Extensive hands-on experience with Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Defender, Defender for Cloud Apps, and enterprise data protection.
• Deep understanding of LLM security, including prompt injection, data leakage, model-mediated exfiltration, agent misuse, and over-permissioned grounding sources.
• Experience with DLP, information security, AI governance, threat modeling, and formal incident, problem, and change management processes.
• Proficiency in PowerShell, Python, and Power Automate.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future employment-based visa sponsorship.

Nice to have

• Experience with SharePoint Online, Teams, Exchange, and Entra ID.
• Experience with Sentinel, Zscaler, Symantec DLP, or comparable platforms.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in cybersecurity, engineering, or a related field.
