Hydropower Engineering Manager (Mechanical Design)

Location: Sacramento or Folsom, California, United States. Local candidates are preferred for regional leadership continuity.

Expected compensation: $130,977–$220,869 annually, depending on skills, experience, education, and geographic location.

What you will do

• Lead the strategy, growth, technical excellence, recruiting, and retention of the Northern California hydropower mechanical practice.
• Manage production operations, including staff development, profitability, morale, quality control, and marketing support.
• Oversee P&IDs, equipment sizing, detailed mechanical design, system calculations, technical reports, client presentations, and construction support.
• Provide technical leadership for feasibility studies, conceptual and design evaluations, pumped-storage concept studies, and project cost estimates.
• Serve as a technical leader and project manager while managing project production, client expectations, technical product development, and quality control.
• Lead multidisciplinary teams and coordinate services with national practice, marketing, and other technical sections.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; a degree in Mechanical Engineering is preferred.
• Minimum 10 years of experience; 15 or more years of experience is preferred.
• Extensive hydropower engineering and mechanical design experience, with strong technical depth in hydropower mechanical systems.
• Professional registration, license, or certification may be required; a California Professional Engineering (PE) license is preferred.
• Experience managing projects, supervising and mentoring staff, and coordinating multidisciplinary technical teams.
• Strong communication, listening, leadership, organizational, client relationship, and multitasking skills.

Nice to have

• Previous experience with an engineering consulting firm.
• Experience managing multiple award contracts and developing long-term strategic client partnerships.
• Active participation in hydropower or hydroelectric industry organizations.
• Experience with succession planning and technical oversight for multidisciplinary teams.
