Field and Laboratory Technician (Construction Materials Testing)

Location: Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Part-time work split between the Nashville laboratory and active construction project sites, with occasional early starts, extended workdays, or weekend assignments.

What you will do

• Perform laboratory testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt according to ASTM, AASHTO, project specifications, and company procedures.
• Conduct compaction, sieve analysis, Atterberg Limits, sand equivalent, concrete compression, Marshall, gyratory, ignition oven, and maximum theoretical density testing.
• Collect, identify, transport, process, and prepare field and laboratory samples.
• Perform field testing and observations at construction sites, including operation of nuclear density gauges after required training and authorization.
• Record calculations, observations, test results, daily reports, and quality control documentation accurately.
• Communicate with Laboratory and Project Managers while maintaining equipment, project records, and a safe laboratory and field environment.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record and ability to travel to project sites.
• Strong mathematical, organizational, communication, and attention-to-detail skills.
• Basic computer proficiency and willingness to learn reporting, testing, and project management systems.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a laboratory and outdoors at active construction sites.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, work on uneven terrain, adapt to changing weather, and occasionally lift up to 40 pounds.

Nice to have

• Previous field or laboratory experience in construction materials testing.
• Knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO, and industry-standard testing procedures.
• ACI concrete, soils and aggregate, or asphalt testing certifications.
• Experience reading construction drawings, specifications, and testing requirements.
