Senior Staff Software Engineer, Recognition Platform (Scala)

What you will do

• Own the end-to-end architecture of the Recognition Platform across edge ingestion, identity resolution, decisioning, notifications, and operator surfaces.
• Define technical direction through architectural RFCs, roadmap sequencing, design reviews, and cross-functional alignment.
• Build and evolve horizontally scalable edge-to-cloud streaming pipelines for high throughput, intermittent connectivity, backpressure, out-of-order events, and low tail latency.
• Design real-time rules and decisioning systems for watchlist alerts, routing, eligibility, consent gating, frequency capping, and next-best actions.
• Architect privacy, identity, and consent models for biometric-regulated environments, including bounded-time opt-out propagation.
• Define SLOs, observability, runbooks, testing, soak testing, feature flags, and progressive production rollouts while mentoring engineers.

Requirements

• 12+ years of experience building and operating distributed, data-intensive production systems, including ownership of multi-service platforms.
• Expert proficiency in a JVM language such as Scala or Java, with experience in event-driven and service-oriented design, gRPC/protobuf, streaming, and relational data modeling.
• Hands-on experience with high-throughput ingestion pipelines, delivery semantics, idempotency, ordering, backpressure, and tail latency.
• Experience designing rules, eligibility, or decisioning systems that combine deterministic logic with probabilistic or model-driven signals.
• Strong technical leadership, written communication, RFC authorship, third-party integrations, observability, automated testing, and progressive delivery.
• Ability to work with physical-world deployment constraints, hardware conditions, and operational complexity beyond staging environments.

Nice to have

• Experience with computer vision, biometric matching, sensor fusion, identity resolution, IoT, edge computing, or fleet-scale telemetry.
• Background in privacy- or biometric-regulated domains such as BIPA, CCPA, or GDPR.
• Experience with hospitality, retail, physical-operations software, CRM, or PMS integrations.
• Experience operating at Uber-tech-lead, TL-of-TLs, or principal-adjacent scope.
