Staff Software Engineer (Backend)

Location: Remote, must be located in the Chicago area; onsite interviews may be required.

Salary: $154,200–$192,750 annually, plus potential bonus and/or equity depending on level and role.

What you will do

• Define reusable, reliable, and scalable backend architectures across the platform and integrations.
• Design, break down, and develop high-performance API-based services that meet SLOs and scale with business demand.
• Modernize legacy systems and technology stacks while promoting strong system design and operational practices.
• Collaborate with engineering, design, and product partners to align backend, API, and integration standards.
• Mentor engineers and influence architecture, documentation, libraries, and internal developer experience.
• Participate in on-call rotations, resolve incidents, and conduct postmortems to improve reliability.

Requirements

• 10+ years of backend software development experience building and operating large-scale, highly available systems.
• Experience with microservices, APIs, event-driven systems, REST, GraphQL, and gRPC.
• 3+ years architecting and operating cloud-native solutions on AWS, including EKS, RDS, MSK, S3, and Lambda.
• Strong knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases, caching strategies, messaging systems, observability, and application security.
• Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, infrastructure as code, DevSecOps, and production monitoring.

Nice to have

• Experience with the Node ecosystem.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience.
