Principal Desktop Engineer (Windows/macOS)

Location: Owings Mills, Maryland, United States; hybrid work with up to three days per week from home.

Base salary: $159,000–$272,000 annually for Maryland, Colorado, Washington, and remote workers. A discretionary bonus may also be available.

What you will do

• Define the enterprise end-user computing roadmap across OS modernization, cloud-first endpoint management, automation, and emerging technologies.
• Lead architecture and technical standards for Windows, macOS, VDI, and endpoint management platforms.
• Drive Windows 11 upgrades, Intune and Autopilot adoption, zero-touch provisioning, and self-service or self-healing support capabilities.
• Serve as the highest-level escalation point for complex endpoint incidents and lead root-cause analysis and remediation.
• Manage, mentor, and develop a distributed team of approximately 20–25 desktop engineers and technicians.
• Oversee large-scale migrations, hardware refreshes, software deployments, platform rollouts, testing strategies, vendor relationships, budgets, and endpoint lifecycle management.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years of IT engineering experience and 5+ years in enterprise desktop or end-user computing roles with leadership responsibilities.
• Deep hands-on expertise with Windows and macOS, including deployment, imaging, troubleshooting, and lifecycle management.
• Expertise with Microsoft SCCM/MECM and Intune, including software distribution, patching, compliance, and co-management.
• Strong knowledge of VDI technologies such as Citrix, VMware Horizon, or Azure Virtual Desktop, plus PowerShell or Python automation.
• Experience supporting thousands of endpoints across multiple locations and hybrid work models, with knowledge of endpoint security and desktop networking.

Nice to have

• Experience in financial services or another regulated industry.
• Experience managing OEMs, software vendors, and service providers, including budgeting, licensing, and contracts.
