Principal Data Architect (Databricks)

Location: USA; fully remote work with up to 25% travel depending on business needs

Base salary: $165,000–$185,000 per year, plus potential bonuses, commissions, equity, and other incentives.

What you will do

• Define client Databricks adoption roadmaps, platform guardrails, self-service maturity models, and use-case prioritization approaches.
• Embed with client business and engineering teams to implement high-priority data use cases and production pipelines.
• Translate delivery requirements into platform feature requests and governance requirements for foundation teams.
• Shape pre-sales and scoping engagements, including technical approach and staffing.
• Coach client architects, engineers, and business-embedded technologists on Databricks patterns and self-service tooling.
• Develop data standards, operating procedures, semantic layers, and lineage capabilities while mentoring the architecture and engineering practice.

Requirements

• 10 years of experience designing and building complex data systems.
• 5+ years of deep, hands-on Databricks experience, including workspace and persona architecture, Unity Catalog, lakehouse patterns, orchestration, governance, and AI/ML tooling.
• At least 4 years of experience in the AWS data landscape.
• Experience with relational databases, transactional and analytical data modeling, BI, data governance and MDM, Spark, streaming, NoSQL, machine learning, MLOps, GenAI foundation models, and DataOps.
• Experience with at least two of Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, and Python for analytics and automation; Terraform is preferred.
• Forward-deployed or embedded delivery experience, strong communication, business acumen, documentation discipline, and tolerance for ambiguity.

Nice to have

• Experience with a platform-and-use-case hub-and-spoke delivery model.
• Background in consulting, systems integration, or professional services.
• Familiarity with SOW-based, time-and-materials delivery and scope management.
