Research Veterinarian (Xenotransplantation)

Location: Fully onsite in Christiansburg, Virginia, United States; up to 20% travel and after-hours on-call participation required.

What you will do

• Provide routine and emergency veterinary care for pigs at a designated pathogen-free barrier facility.
• Manage herd health, diagnose and treat medical conditions, and conduct health surveillance.
• Assist with surgeries, operate medical equipment, perform euthanasia and necropsies, and maintain animal medical records.
• Support the breeding program through semen collection, analysis, processing, and artificial insemination.
• Author animal-related SOPs, participate in IACUC, USDA, FDA, and AAALAC activities, and train animal and veterinary technicians.
• Participate in an after-hours on-call rotation.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and 5+ years of veterinary experience.
• 3+ years of large-animal veterinary care, preferably with pigs.
• 3+ years of experience with regulatory bodies, controlled substances, diagnostic testing, general surgery, population health surveillance, and necropsies.
• Virginia veterinary license, USDA Level II Accreditation, and eligibility for a DEA license; candidates licensed in another state must be able to obtain Virginia licensure.
• Evidence-based medicine, critical thinking, problem-solving, SOP authoring or editing, Microsoft Office, and team coaching skills.
• Must not interact with pigs outside the company. Must lift 75 lbs to waist level and push or pull 200 lbs on wheels.

Nice to have

• Advanced surgical skills, including abdominal and general surgery.
• Knowledge of US FDA CFR requirements for xenotransplantation products for human use.
• Understanding of GxP compliance.
