TL;DR
Veterinary Technician I/II (Xenotransplantation) (large-animal veterinary care): Providing husbandry and veterinary support for pigs in a barrier facility supporting a xenotransplantation program with an accent on herd health, operative procedures, sample management, and animal records. Location: Onsite at the Christiansburg, Virginia facility; relocation assistance may be available for non-local candidates

Salary: $30.05–$31.25 per hour for Veterinary Technician I; $30.77–$36.06 per hour for Veterinary Technician II

What you will do

  • Provide daily husbandry and general care for pigs in a barrier facility.
  • Manage herd health activities, including nutrition, vaccinations, medications, treatments, reproduction, artificial insemination, and boar semen collection.
  • Assist veterinarians and surgeons with operative procedures, facility setup and teardown, anesthesia monitoring, vital checks, and postoperative care.
  • Support imaging, biopsies, bronchoscopy, tissue procurement, and cardiopulmonary care.
  • Collect, store, ship, and inventory blood, nasal, tissue, and other samples for health and pathogen testing.
  • Maintain accurate animal care, husbandry, health, and activity records.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in veterinary technology or animal sciences.
  • Large-animal care and handling experience: 2+ years for Technician I or 4+ years for Technician II with an associate degree; reduced experience thresholds apply with a bachelor's degree.
  • Experience following IACUC and research protocols, working with controlled substances, performing medical tests, observing animal behavior, collecting samples, and administering medication.
  • Licensed Veterinary Technician through the Virginia Board of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Knowledge of animal husbandry, data collection, animal research regulations, USDA, FDA, and DEA requirements.
  • Ability to work independently, author and follow SOPs, plan operations, lift 75 lbs to waist level, and push or pull 200 lbs on wheels. No interaction with pigs outside the company is permitted.

Nice to have

  • Bachelor's degree in veterinary technology or animal sciences.
