Principal AI Engineer (Healthcare)

Location: New York, NY; hybrid schedule with three days per week in the office and remaining days remote. Candidates must reside within, or be willing to relocate to, a commutable distance from one of the talent markets.

Salary: $206,600–$284,300 per year, plus eligibility for a bonus incentive plan.

What you will do

• Define the technical strategy, reference architecture, and roadmap for enterprise AI products and platforms.
• Design scalable systems for retrieval, LLM orchestration, agentic workflows, human-in-the-loop processing, and AI governance.
• Lead decisions on model strategies, vendors, platforms, infrastructure, and build-versus-buy choices.
• Build prototypes, proofs of concept, and reference implementations for emerging AI technologies.
• Establish standards for evaluation, observability, model lifecycle management, reliability, security, compliance, and responsible AI.
• Guide architecture reviews, influence executive stakeholders, and mentor senior technical leaders across multiple engineering teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 12+ years of software engineering experience, including large-scale distributed systems.
• Production experience designing and operating enterprise-scale AI platforms or products.
• Deep expertise in LLM technologies, RAG, agentic systems, orchestration frameworks, evaluation methodologies, and AI operations.
• Expert-level proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript/JavaScript, with the ability to contribute across the technology stack.
• Experience setting technical direction, establishing standards, and influencing teams and executives without direct authority.

Nice to have

• Experience with Model Context Protocol, workflow orchestration, autonomous systems, and emerging AI frameworks.
• Experience in healthcare, financial services, life sciences, government, or other regulated industries.
• Experience managing AI vendor ecosystems and shared infrastructure across multiple business units.
