TL;DR
Associate Materials Scientist (Pharmaceutical Materials Science): Synthesizing and characterizing salt forms, polymorphs, co-crystals, and API particles for pharmaceutical drug candidates with an accent on solid-state, powder, and surface characterization. Focus on applying X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, microscopy, spectroscopy, and related experimental techniques to solve materials science problems and support solid form selection for clinical studies.

Location: Groton, CT, USA; candidates should live within a commutable distance of Groton

Compensation: USD 25–30.5 per hour

What you will do

  • Synthesize and evaluate salt forms and polymorphs of pharmaceutical drug candidates.
  • Conduct solid-state characterization using X-ray powder diffraction, thermal analysis, moisture sorption, microscopy, and spectroscopy.
  • Define and implement crystallization, polymorph, salt, co-crystal screening, and API particle characterization activities.
  • Characterize pharmaceutical powders, including particle size, particle shape, surface energy, and surface roughness.
  • Collaborate with Medicinal Chemistry, Formulation, and Biopharmaceutics teams on solid form selection strategies for clinical studies.
  • Document accurate experimental results in the electronic laboratory notebook and contribute to new Materials Science approaches.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of experience, or a Master’s or PhD in pharmaceutical science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with solid-state characterization techniques and strong data analysis and interpretation skills.
  • Experience solving Materials Science problems through experimental approaches and team collaboration.
  • Understanding of physical, analytical, and organic chemistry.
  • Strong organizational, independent working, oral communication, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work onsite in Groton, CT, during Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; occasional weekends, overtime, and holidays may be required.

Nice to have

  • Experience with FTIR, NIR, FT-Raman, and/or SSNMR.
  • Programming experience.
  • Interest in learning new technologies and concepts.
