TL;DR
Mechanical EIT/Designer (HVAC): Designing HVAC and plumbing systems for commercial and institutional buildings across the full project lifecycle with an accent on mechanical system layouts, equipment selection, energy modeling, and code-compliant construction packages. Focus on developing building loads, control diagrams, life-cycle cost analyses, and field observations for complex building engineering projects.

Location: Boston, Massachusetts, United States; preference is given to local candidates. The role includes visits to project sites for existing-condition verification, construction-progress monitoring, and field observation reports.

Expected annual compensation: $68,124–$104,640.

What you will do

  • Design HVAC and plumbing systems for building projects from feasibility studies and conceptual design through construction administration, commissioning, and close-out.
  • Develop design packages including design calculations, code summaries, construction drawings, and specifications.
  • Prepare sections, elevations, flow diagrams, control diagrams, point lists, and sequences of operation for mechanical systems.
  • Select and evaluate mechanical equipment using fan and pump curves, psychrometric calculations, manufacturer data, and equipment-selection software.
  • Develop HVAC building loads and support energy modeling, life-cycle cost analyses, and evaluation of building energy-model inputs and outputs.
  • Visit project sites to verify existing conditions, monitor construction, and prepare field observation reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 1 year of A/E consulting experience or relevant internship/co-op experience; 3 years is preferred.
  • Experience designing HVAC and plumbing systems for commercial or institutional buildings.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical engineering design principles, building codes, construction practices, and HVAC and plumbing controls.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Trane TRACE or similar software, and equipment-selection software.
  • Ability to work in the Boston, United States area and visit project sites.

Nice to have

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or an expectation of obtaining EIT certification; candidates without EIT certification may be titled Mechanical Designer.
  • Experience with IES VE energy modeling software.
  • Knowledge of sustainable building design and certifications such as LEED AP or WELL AP.
  • Experience with healthcare, education, science and technology, or civic/government projects.
