Geotechnical Designer/EI (Geotechnical Engineering)

Location: Columbia, South Carolina, United States. Local candidates preferred; travel is required for site visits, with up to 40% travel for subsurface exploration oversight.

What you will do

• Perform geotechnical analysis and design for roadways, retaining walls, bridges, buildings, dams, soil and rock slopes, and asphalt and concrete pavements.
• Review boring logs, laboratory data, and design plans for slope stability, driven piles, drilled shafts, and other geotechnical tasks.
• Conduct settlement and slope stability analyses, including project-specific evaluations of liquefaction, slope instability mitigation, and ground improvement.
• Oversee subsurface characterization programs, set up field exploration activities, and coordinate with subcontractors.
• Prepare design options, cost estimates, plans, specifications, drawings, and geotechnical reports.
• Coordinate with project managers and support senior geotechnical staff in delivering project goals.

Requirements

• Routine engineering assignments require the application and modification of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
• Ability to conduct analyses and exercise judgment when evaluating and selecting engineering approaches.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with senior geotechnical staff.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Local candidates preferred.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering.
• Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate.
• Experience with CAD software, particularly MicroStation.
• Candidates without an EIT may be placed in a Design Coordinator job code and are expected to obtain the EIT for career progression.
