Head of Engineering (Backend)

What you will do

• Own technical strategy, delivery execution, and operational maturity as the platform scales.
• Lead, mentor, and grow an engineering team of approximately five to eight engineers.
• Establish engineering culture, code review standards, documentation practices, and technical decision-making frameworks.
• Partner with the Founder/CEO, Technical Lead, Product, and executive stakeholders on priorities, trade-offs, and technical direction.
• Oversee DevOps and infrastructure strategy, including CI/CD, cloud spend, and security compliance.
• Contribute hands-on to feature implementation, code reviews, system reliability, incident response, and technical debt reduction.

Requirements

• 9+ years of software development experience, including senior leadership experience.
• 6+ years managing and growing high-caliber engineering teams.
• Deep experience with modern backend ecosystems such as Python/Django, Ruby on Rails, or Go.
• Ability to work hands-on while managing people and making high-stakes technical decisions.
• Experience addressing real-time dispatching, matching algorithms, high-concurrency data processing, or similarly complex marketplace systems.
• Ability to work in a hybrid environment from Austin, Texas.
