Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Onsite in Manhattan, New York

An early-stage AI startup building frontier legal infrastructure to extract, structure, and reconcile corporate legal information into auditable outputs.

What you will do

• Design, build, and scale graph infrastructure and data pipelines to turn unstructured legal documents into queryable ground truth.
• Architect and implement public APIs used by internal services, agents, and customers.
• Build DAG-based processing on Prefect for extracting and reconciling legal data from source documents.
• Partner with AI researchers and engineers to integrate agentic systems into production workflows.
• Operate services on Kubernetes, managing deployment, observability, and performance.

Requirements

• Strong experience building production backend systems in Python, Go, Rust, or Zig.
• Experience designing and operating large-scale data pipelines.
• Deep familiarity with graph databases, specifically Neo4j (modeling, querying, and production).
• Expertise in public API design, including ergonomics, versioning, and evolvability.
• Comfort operating services on Kubernetes.
• Must be based onsite in Manhattan, NYC.

Nice to have

• Experience building a graph database from scratch.
• Experience with DAG orchestration systems such as Airflow, Dagster, or Temporal.
• Experience building agentic or LLM-powered systems.
• Experience with Kafka or similar event streaming platforms.
