TL;DR
Principal Power Electronics Engineer I (Aerospace): Developing next-generation power electronics hardware for satellite payloads and space power systems with an accent on power architecture, converter design, circuit analysis, and verification. Focus on leading board bring-up, qualification campaigns, production release, and mentoring engineers while solving complex reliability, power integrity, and control challenges.

Location: El Segundo, California, United States; on-site. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, conditional residents, asylees, refugees, or eligible to obtain the required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

What you will do

  • Define electrical power system architectures, derive subsystem requirements, and perform trade studies.
  • Design DC-DC converters, motor drives, inverters, power management circuits, and control circuits from concept through production release.
  • Model and analyze analog and power electronics designs, including worst-case, stress, reliability, FMEA, and power integrity analysis.
  • Develop verification, integration, qualification, and production acceptance test plans and compliance matrices.
  • Lead board bring-up, verification testing, system integration, qualification campaigns, production transition, and manufacturing support.
  • Lead a small engineering team, mentor engineers, monitor industry trends, and generate intellectual property.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • At least 9 years of experience designing analog and power electronics.
  • Experience with electrical power systems, power architectures, power requirements, SWAP-C trade studies, converter topologies, and power management and control blocks.
  • Experience modeling and controlling isolated and non-isolated DC-DC converters and designing custom magnetics and power filters for low noise and EMC.
  • Hands-on experience testing and troubleshooting electronics and power converters with laboratory instruments.
  • Experience with schematic capture, PCB layout, circuit simulation, and analysis tools including Altium, OrCAD, Allegro, Xpedition, SPICE, PLECS, Simulink, MATLAB, MathCAD, ANSYS Q3D, SiWave, or HyperLynx.

Nice to have

  • Master of Science or PhD in Electrical Engineering with a power electronics research focus.
  • Experience with high-reliability electronics for automotive, space, or defense applications and knowledge of radiation effects.
  • Experience with GaN or SiC devices, soft-switching and resonant converters, inverters, motor drives, fault-tolerant design, isolation, grounding, and thermal management.
  • Knowledge of spacecraft power systems, including MPPT, battery management, electric propulsion, power conditioning, and power distribution units.
  • Programming experience for hardware testing and data processing, including Python or MATLAB.
