Principal Firmware/Middleware Engineer (Embedded)

Location: San Jose, California, United States. Onsite role; remote work is not available.

Annual pay range: $230,000–$270,000, plus eligibility for bonus opportunities. Final compensation depends on geographic location, experience, and skills.

What you will do

• Define the embedded software and firmware architecture for UALink switch ASICs used in AI cluster scale-up systems.
• Collaborate with ASIC, RTL, and verification teams on hardware-software interfaces, registers, scratchpads, and memory maps.
• Design firmware supporting UALink physical, link, and transport layers, including credits, routing, and flow control.
• Architect deterministic link training, topology discovery, dynamic routing, and congestion management.
• Lead SDK and API design for BMC integration through OpenBMC and Redfish.
• Optimize latency and bandwidth while designing RAS, fault isolation, secure boot, authentication, and runtime attestation.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
• 15+ years of hands-on experience in embedded systems, server platform architecture, or low-level silicon firmware development.
• Expert proficiency in C for bare-metal and RTOS environments, plus Python for hardware automation and modeling.
• Deep knowledge of UALink, NVLink, CXL, or PCIe Gen5/Gen6 and high-speed interconnect systems.
• Strong understanding of credit-based flow control, packet routing, PHY equalization, and SerDes management.
• Experience with JTAG, Lauterbach TRACE32, oscilloscopes, and PCIe or protocol analyzers.

Nice to have

• Experience with ThreadX, FreeRTOS, or Zephyr.
• Experience with AI cluster scale-up switches and collective communication primitives such as All-Reduce and All-to-All.
