TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer IV - Life Sciences (HVAC/Mechanical Utilities): Designing and engineering HVAC, mechanical utility, and piping systems for complex life sciences and food and beverage facilities with an accent on advanced system design, engineering calculations, code compliance, and project delivery. Focus on leading mechanical design teams, coordinating with architects, engineers, contractors, and manufacturers, and guiding projects through construction administration, commissioning, and startup.

Location: Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA; full-time, onsite role.

What you will do

  • Lead the mechanical discipline scope, budget, planning, and design delivery across projects of varying size and complexity.
  • Design HVAC, mechanical utility, plumbing, and piping systems, including load calculations, utility assessments, energy modeling, equipment selection, specifications, plans, P&IDs, and schedules.
  • Lead field surveys, evaluate existing conditions, support field reporting, and resolve non-compliant conditions identified during site walks and construction surveys.
  • Develop design reports, narratives, construction documentation, specifications, code evaluations, installation details, and HAZOP reviews.
  • Support construction through RFI responses, submittal reviews, punch lists, progress reports, commissioning, and startup.
  • Coordinate with clients, architects, engineers, project managers, construction managers, subcontractors, vendors, manufacturers, and trade partners while mentoring less experienced staff.

Requirements

  • ABET-accredited bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with a mechanical focus.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience and a Professional Engineer registration in good standing.
  • Advanced experience designing and implementing HVAC, mechanical utility, and piping systems, including engineering calculations.
  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, fire, and building codes.
  • Ability to lead complex project design, coordinate cross-discipline teams, and manage mechanical scope delivery.
  • Ability to travel for client development, project execution, and training opportunities.

Nice to have

  • Experience in life sciences, pharmaceutical, biotech, laboratory, or food and beverage environments.
  • Advanced knowledge of GMP manufacturing environments and applicable standards such as ASHRAE, SMACNA, ISPE, FDA, ISO, NFPA, and OSHA.
  • Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and sustainable design practices such as LEED or WELL.
  • Experience with Revit plugins and parametric workflows using Dynamo, Grasshopper, or Rhino.
  • Experience with advanced mechanical system troubleshooting and design training development.
